18 Norovirus Outbreaks in Beijing Schools Should be Disinfected in Time

(Reporter Zhang Xiaomei) The Beijing Youth Daily reporter learned from the Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention that the Beijing Norovirus was frequently reported recently. Since November, the city has reported a total of 18 episodes of norovirus acute gastroenteritis, which all occurred in schools. The CDC reminded the public to wash their hands and pay attention to personal hygiene. Schools and other institutions should disinfect in a timely manner.

Of the 18 recent reports of Norovirus epidemics, 13 occurred in kindergartens and 5 in primary schools. The epidemic increased by 125% compared with the same period in 2015. It is reported that Norovirus is mainly transmitted through contaminated food and water, and can also be transmitted through contact with patient excrement and vomitus, contaminated hands, objects and utensils, and aerosols produced by vomiting. The most common symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting. Children are more prone to vomiting than adults. Some patients have nausea, abdominal pain, headache, fever, chills, and muscle pain.

At present, there is no vaccine against the virus and no specific antiviral drugs. Norovirus infection does not require special treatment in general, but frequent vomiting or diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Therefore, the elderly, infants, and people with basic diseases need special attention to prevent dehydration and other complications. People of all age groups can be infected with norovirus, and usually appear symptoms within 12 to 48 hours after the virus is ingested. The disease duration is 2 to 3 days.

In response to the occurrence of epidemic situations in schools and other institutions, the Beijing Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention prompts schools to do a good morning check and strictly register for absence due to illness. Once children and students are found to have symptoms such as cluster nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, they should promptly report to the CDC within their jurisdiction. Suspected patients should take isolation measures and seek medical attention.

The disease control department specifically reminded that special attention should be paid to disinfecting the patient's vomitus, feces and the use of articles. At the same time, kindergartens and schools should do a good job in disinfecting the environment during the high incidence of epidemics, focusing on personal hygiene and maintaining good hand hygiene.
