A new study from the University of Houston in the United States will put a virtual reality eye mask on drug addiction patients into the "Heroin Cave", hoping to help them quit drug addiction.

The researchers hope to develop a virtual gathering filled with stimulants to stimulate the wearer's desire for drugs. They hope that in this way they will better train those who suffer from drug addiction in real life.

In this virtual heroin environment, there are various scenes of smoking and injecting heroin. Researchers say it took them nearly a year to bring the entire environment to life.

The study at the University of Houston School of Social Work uses eight infrared camera systems to project a 3D avatar of the same size as a real person, and a virtual environment that can interact with it. Many details have been carefully designed to stimulate the drug addiction of the participants.

“In traditional treatment, we use a role-playing approach, but the environment is completely wrong,” said Patrick Bordnick, head of the study.

“They know that they are in the treatment room and there is no drug at all. We need to put the patients in a real virtual reality environment, let them feel that there are drugs inside, and tempted them to understand the situation more clearly and improve the treatment effect. Said Bodnick.

Bodnik has also used virtual reality to conduct research on other issues such as cravings. The results show that participants learn some skills in the virtual reality environment and then strengthen their confidence in resisting temptation in real life.

"We want to know if reducing the temptation in the lab will change the use of heroin in the real world," Bodnick said.
