The 6-minute walk test (6 MWT) is a widely used method for assessing the therapeutic efficacy and disease progression in patients with neuromuscular disease. However, 6WMT takes a long time, and patients with severe lower extremity muscle weakness are often intolerable; and because of its learning effect, patients have considerable heterogeneity when repeating 6 MWT.
Previous studies have found that the 2-minute walk test (2 MWT) can be used as an alternative to 6WMT in patients with multiple sclerosis, stroke, and sporadic inclusion body myositis; but it is not known in patients with neuromuscular disease. How effective is it.
Therefore, Danish scholar Andersen et al. conducted a methodological study to evaluate whether 2 MWT could replace 6 MWT as a viable method for describing walking function in patients with neuromuscular diseases. The study was published in the recent journal Neurology.
The study included 115 patients with different neuromuscular diseases for a 2-day test. A 2-minute walk test and a 6-minute walk test are performed each day, with at least a 30-minute break between tests. The order of the two walking tests is determined by random assignment of sealed envelopes. A total of 38 healthy controls were included to complete a 6-minute walk test.
The results of the study showed that the average walking distance of the patient's 2 MWT test was 142.8 meters, and the average walking distance of the 6 MWT test was 405.3 meters. The walking distance of the 2 MWT test was significantly correlated with the walking distance of the 6WMT test.
In patients and healthy controls, the subject's walking speed decreased significantly from the first minute to the last minute at 6 WMT; this was less pronounced at 2 WMT. These results were consistent among patients with different disease diagnoses and disease severity.
The study confirmed by, in addition to the inclusion body myositis, 2 MWT can also replace one of the other 6 MWT walking function in patients with different neuromuscular disorders described as a viable method.
