After 90 Chinese women Dr. Lan Shujie found the super bacteria's nemesis

Recently, "The World is Beautiful for You 2016-2017 Influences the World Chinese Festival" was unveiled at Tsinghua University. 11 Chinese and groups from all over the world who have achieved outstanding achievements in their respective fields have won the "World Life Achievement Award for the Impact on the World". Awards such as the “World Chinese Awards”. Among them, a gentle and beautiful 90-year-old female scientist has entered the field of vision because of the honor of the Star of Hope that influenced the World Chinese Festival this year.

She is Lam Shu Jie, a female student who is beautiful and talented.

In 2017, Lan Shujie will graduate from the University of Melbourne, Australia with a Ph.D. in chemical engineering. During her Ph.D., her team successfully developed a molecule that can fight against super bacteria. This major breakthrough is expected to save tens of millions of lives.

What is "super bacteria"?

Under normal circumstances, our weapon against pathogens is antibiotics. The emergence of antibiotics has enabled us to curb the threat of bacteria to life. However, the good times are not long. With the widespread and even excessive use of antibiotics, randomly mutated drug-resistant bacteria have been screened and enriched, and many antibiotics have begun to weaken or even become ineffective. These bacteria, which cause most antibiotics to "fold" because of drug resistance, are called "super bacteria."

According to statistics, at least 700,000 people with various infectious diseases such as bacterial infection, malaria, AIDS and tuberculosis die every year because of drug resistance problems. The Global Antimicrobial Resistance Review report released in 2016 states: “If no measures are taken, it is estimated that 10 million people will die every year due to antibiotic resistance (AMR) problems, which means every 3 years. In seconds, AMR will kill 1 person."

To some extent, antibiotic resistance is an inevitable natural process. However, long-term excessive use of antibiotics and lack of high-quality drugs have greatly accelerated this process. Therefore, how to fight against "super bacteria" is imminent. It is a proposition that is closely related to hundreds of millions of people, but it is also a world-class problem.

"Tear tear" super bacteria

It is this key issue that Lan Shujie wants to overcome. In 2016, she successfully developed a new special-effect drug against super bacteria under the leadership of Professor Qiao Guanghua from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Melbourne and Associate Professor Neil O'Brien-Simpson from the University of Melbourne School of Dentistry.

The special drug developed by the Lan Shujie team is a star-shaped peptide polymer with a diameter of about 10 nm, which is larger than other types of antimicrobial peptides. Lan Shujie explained that the process of making polymers is like building blocks. They organize many protein molecules from the core to form a larger star-shaped polymer. In contrast, common antimicrobial peptides are usually just a small chemical molecule.

“The polymer structure is similar to the stars, the ability to 'tear' the cell walls of super bacteria and initiate a bacterial suicide system that eventually destroys them,” she said. “And, super bacteria are not resistant to this polymer. What's more, Peptide polymers are designed for super bacteria and do not harm normal cells." This exciting research was published in the journal Nature Microbiology.

The media gave a large-scale report on the results of Lan Shujie, praising her "the key to fighting against super bacteria"! However, Lan Shujie is very cautious and humble. She emphasized that research is still in its infancy. Currently, the team is focusing on optimizing the formulation of new drugs and striving to find the best solution against super bacteria.
