Air microfluidics technology enables rapid manufacture of emulsions, 3D biomodule materials

Release date: 2018-02-06

A research team at the University of Twente (UT) in the Netherlands has developed a new and unique 3D bioprinting system that works by hitting particles in the air through the “air microfluidic” approach.

In the UT setting, the dish is rotated on a "pottery wheel". The Petri dish serves as the substrate for the material, under the two pin-sized nozzles, and is used to make the printhead of the machine. Each pin is loaded with a different material, one that cures when in contact with air and the other that is encapsulated. The encapsulating material is a CaCl salt, but its vision can be replaced with, for example, a cell-containing ink.

Each nozzle is jetted at high speed, and the molecules of each material combine in the air to act as a channel. The particles adhere to the contact pads to form a gel-like separate structure. The centrifugal force pushes the particles outward to form a hollow tube, providing valuable "components" for further medical research, ie, cell culture into tissue.

A seemingly accidental method, the combination of jets and fast rotating dishes forms a liquid-filled foam microstructure within the gel. The pores in the foam are tiny and can produce Li Lie that is closer to the natural cellular structure of the human body. By adding molds to the spinning wheel, researchers can also create more complex 3D structures, such as bone.

The mixed granules also provide a new method of preparing emulsions which are commonly used in the manufacture of mixtures of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

The UT release explains that if solid microfluidic methods are used, the flow rates of these products are very slow for industrial applications, and it takes about 1000 minutes or 17 hours to fill a cubic centimeter. And using the new air microfluidic method, it can be done in a few minutes. ”
