Alzheimer's disease can be blood test?

Release date: 2015-05-28

Recent studies have found that simple blood tests can be used to detect early Alzheimer's disease in the elderly.

Detailed standardization guidelines are needed to guide practice before blood testing, and related articles have been published in the journal Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia.

"If we make the blood test for Alzheimer's disease a must-test for primary care, then we must have a mentoring guide." Dr. Sid O'Bryant said he is a member of the University of North Texas Health Center and Alz Director of the Research Center of the Hermann Disease Institute.

“The highly rigorous guidance guide will guide the study of Alzheimer's blood-based biomarkers and ensure that each laboratory follows the same procedure to collect blood,” Dr. O'Bryant said.

“You can create a blood test in the lab, but if you don’t have a systematic way to collect blood, the test will never be implemented,” he said. “You can test in one way in one lab and something different in another.”

Dr. O 'Bryant has used standards from the United States, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom and other countries for several years at work. There are detailed rules in the guide from the type of lancet to the length and storage time.

Just like blood testing other diseases like diabetes, an agreement must be established to ensure that each laboratory performs the exact same test. These guidelines need to be established prior to approval by the Food and Drug Administration to use the test in a clinical setting.

“At the University of North Texas Health Center, our next step is to bring these blood guidelines to clinical practice,” said Dr. O'Bryant. "This is unprecedented."
