This sample shows a class of malignant cancers called "osteosarcoma" that can help us understand how this type of cancer affects the body. This evidence also shows that many of the cancers may be buried in the long river of human history.
"The emergence of modern medicine seems to indicate that cancer and tumors are caused by modern lifestyles and environmental factors." One of the researchers, Edward Odes of Witwatersrand University in South Africa, said: "Our research shows that cancer has been around for a million years and it has no inevitable connection with modern society."
Researchers from the University of Witwatersrand said they did not know whether the sample was from an adult or a child, and it was not clear whether the cancer caused the death of the sample source. But evidence suggests that this cancer can affect its ability to walk and cause great pain.
In related articles, the researchers said they found earlier samples of fossil bone tumors, which were 1.98 million years old. Unlike the bone cancer samples described above, the tumors in this sample are benign. Previously, the earliest bone tumor samples were 1.2 million years old. Due to this discovery, this number has been greatly advanced. Interestingly, the owner of this benign tumor sample is a 12-13 year old child, which has never been discovered before. And the tumor grows near the spine, something that has never happened.
Previously, it was widely believed that there was a link between cancer and modern society because of the previous analysis of the mummified samples of Egypt and no trace of any cancer. However, although current evidence suggests that cancer is an ancient presence, its high frequency of occurrence is also associated with modern social lifestyles such as smoking.
What researchers need to explore further is how many cancers are caused by bad lifestyles, and how many cancers are caused only by genetic mutations. This will be a key help for our future cancer treatment.
The results are published in the latest issue of the South African Journal of Science.
