Shandougen and Northern bean root cannot be mixed

Shandougen and Beidougen are commonly used traditional Chinese medicines, but due to the different medication habits in different provinces and cities in China, the phenomenon of foreign bodies with the same name in the use of traditional Chinese medicines has occurred from time to time. In addition, the names of Shandougen and Beidougen are similar, resulting in some The phenomenon of mixing soya bean root with northern bean root appears in places. In fact, Shandougen and Beidougen are two kinds of medicines. Shandougen was first introduced in the Song Dynasty "Kaibao Materia Medica." Afterwards, there have been many records of ancient Chinese herbal medicine. For example, "The Draft of Sketch" records: "Shandougenshengjiannan" The valley, which is also present in Guangxi, is also known as the "Guangdou root. The seedlings are like beans and roots are used for this purpose." However, the north bean root has not been recorded as a mountain bean root in the ancient herb. The 2010 edition of the “Chinese Pharmacopoeia” has loaded Shandougen and Beidougen with two different drugs. The two drugs have different basic sources and their efficacy is not the same. Therefore, we should pay attention to the distinction in the clinical application. The author states the differences in shape discrimination, efficacy differences, and toxicity differences of the two drugs as follows:

Difference in traits

Shandougen: The dry roots and rhizomes of leguminous vietnamese Viet Nam are mainly produced in Guangdong and Guangxi, and are also known as “Broad bean roots”. Its rhizomes are irregular nodules, and the rhizomes are long and cylindrical, slightly curved, often branched and varied in length. The surface is gray-brown to tan, with longitudinal wrinkles and transversely long lenticels, which are hard and hard to break. Pieces of traits are round-shaped slices, light brown skin surface, light yellow wood, brown or brown surrounding, hard, with pods gas, extremely bitter taste.

North bean root: dried rhizomes of the genus Damius dauricum. Mainly produced in Northeast China, Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi and other places. Its rhizomes are slender, cylindrical, yellow-brown to dark brown on the surface, with many curved roots, and prominent roots and longitudinal wrinkles. The skin is easy to peel off, and the toughness is not easy to break. The traits of the cut pieces are round round thick slices, grayish to pale yellow on the cut surface, yellowish on the wood, radially arranged, with a medullary center, brownish-brown to pale brown, and slightly bitter taste.

Difference in efficacy

Shandou root: It has the effects of clearing away heat and detoxifying, swelling and pharynx. Indications are enthusiasm, pharyngitis, sore throat, laryngeal wind, swollen gums, etc.

North bean root: It has the effects of clearing heat, detoxifying, and removing wind pain. Indications sore throat, tonsillitis, rheumatism, numbness of the limbs, enteritis, dysentery and so on.

Toxicity difference

Shandougen: Modern studies have shown that matrine in roots can act on the brain, causing spasms, paralysis of the diaphragm, and nerve endings of respiratory muscles. Mushrooms were decocted with Shandougen 25g/kg, resulting in respiratory depression, shocks, delirium, and death.

North bean root: The main component of the north bean root is dauricine. The study found that the subacute toxicity test with dauricine showed that the drug was administered at a dose of 4.8 to 60 milligrams for 18 days or from February to March. With adverse effects, doses of more than 150 mg for 2 to 3 months have different levels of damage to the liver, and the degree of damage increases with increasing dose. Mild damage is caused, and there is no adverse effect on renal and adrenal glands below 150 mg. .

Therefore, although both have the role of heat-clearing and detoxifying, the main component of Sophora flavescens root contains more matrine, and the toxicity is greater than that of dauricine. In the 2010 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, the amount of the north bean root was 3 to 9 grams, and the amount of the mountain bean root was 3 to 6 grams. The purpose was to prevent poisoning accidents. Therefore, regardless of whether it is the sales and sales department or the medical units, the pharmacopoeia should prevail. The two drugs should be used separately and must not be mixed.
