This therapy is still used for the first time in the world.
The affiliated hospital of the Kyoto University School of Medicine introduced the transplant at the press conference on the 9th. The surgery was completed in October this year. The patient was a 50-year-old male transplanted with dopamine neural progenitor cells cultured by other iPS cells. In about 3 hours of transplant surgery, the doctor injected about 2.4 million dopaminergic neural progenitor cells into the brain of this patient.
According to reports, this is the world's first transplant operation using iPS cells to treat human Parkinson's disease. At present, the patient's recovery is good, and the surgical effect and safety need long-term observation. According to the plan, the clinical trial will be carried out for 7 patients.
iPS cells are stem cells that are "reprogrammed" by mature somatic cells and have similar differentiation potential to embryonic stem cells. Previously, researchers have confirmed in animal studies that iPS cell therapy can treat Parkinson's disease in monkeys.
Parkinson's disease is a degenerative disease of the nervous system. The main pathological change is the death of nerve cells secreting dopamine in the brain. The clinical manifestations include hand and foot tremor, body stiffness, and slow movement. There is no cure.
Soy lecithin powder is a substance derived from soybeans that is commonly used as an emulsifier, stabilizer, and thickener in food products. It is a natural source of phospholipids, which are essential components of cell membranes. Soy lecithin powder is often added to chocolate, baked goods, and other processed foods to improve texture and prevent separation of ingredients. It is also used in the production of dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals. Soy lecithin powder is generally considered safe for consumption, although some people with soy allergies may need to avoid it.
