A recent Australian study shows that observing the status of retinal blood vessels in adolescents may be a good indicator of their future risk of cardiovascular disease.
The researchers of the Westmead Institute of Medicine examined the retinal blood vessels of 1600 students from 11 to 19 years of age from 2009 to 2011 and used questionnaires to understand the students' physical and mental health. Observing retinal vascular conditions is a non-invasive method for assessing the blood circulation system.
The researchers found that subjects with lower quality of life related to health, especially males, had relatively thick retinal vascular arterioles and relatively small venules. Studies have shown that poor health and structural changes in retinal blood vessels are associated with an increased risk of future cardiovascular disease, as thickening of the blood vessels is one of the signs of inflammation and reduced blood flow. The study of the Westmead Institute of Medicine also showed that for every 1 point increase in health-related quality of life, the human retinal blood vessels become thinner by about 0.00005 mm.
The United States Daily Science website cited the research project leader, Bambi Gopinath, as saying that this is the first study to show that the low quality of life associated with health is independently associated with changes in retinal blood vessels. (According to Xinhua News Agency, May 1st)
