Recently, the Li Ocean team of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has successfully developed a new technology and equipment for high-throughput exhaled gas detection. The relevant research results were published in the American Analytical Chemistry.

As a new type of clinical assistant diagnosis, the analysis and detection of exhaled gas has broad application prospects in the field of medical diagnosis. Part of the body's metabolic products are transported by the blood to the lungs, where they appear in the exhaled gases by gas exchange. Exhaled gas reflects the metabolic and pathological conditions of the body. Some substances may even become biomarkers of certain diseases. For example, acetone is a biomarker of diabetes. In recent years, in the airway chronic inflammation, lung cancer, cirrhosis, breast cancer and other diseases, the use of exhaled gas detection to find specific markers has been increasingly researched.

The Li Ocean team used vacuum ultraviolet light ionization combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPPI-TOFMS) to analyze human exhaled breath under high pressure, and achieved high levels of acetone, ethanol, acetic acid and other substances in human exhaled breath within 1 minute of sampling time. Sensitive detection, which has important application prospects in the fields of pollution exposure analysis and occupational disease prevention.

Compared with other exhaled breath detection methods, the biggest advantage of this technology is that it is less affected by humidity, especially for the detection of exhaled breath with relative humidity up to 100%. It successfully eliminates various dehumidification methods and causes measurement of the object to be tested. Insufficient loss.

Exhaled gas detection is non-invasive, non-invasive, easy to sample, and can be continuously sampled. It is a new topic in analytical chemistry and medicine, and more updated analytical instruments and analytical methods are still needed. HPPI-TOFMS is used in human exhaled breath analysis. It is simple, fast and does not require any pre-treatment. It is expected to be a high-throughput disease screening tool.
