Autoimmune diseases often involve the patient's own kidneys. Monitoring an autoantibody in the patient's blood can help doctors predict the risk of recurrence.
The results were published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). This measure may help protect the patient's kidney health.
In patients with autoimmune disorders (anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies ANCA-associated vasculitis), antibodies produced in vivo damage blood vessels in the body. Recurrence of the condition can cause severe and permanent damage to organs and other parts of the body.
Dr. Jan Willem Cohen Tervaert and colleagues do not know if blood ANCA antibody levels can be used to predict the risk of disease recurrence in patients. The researchers tracked 166 cases of ANCA-associated vasculitis, of which 104 had kidney problems associated with their disease (ANCA-associated vasculitis), 62 of whom did not. At the 49 months of the mean follow-up study, after 18 ANCA measurements, 89 patients had an increase in ANCA and 74 had disease recurrence.
In patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis involving the kidney, an increase in ANCA was associated with a 11-fold increase in the risk of recurrence of ANCA-associated vasculitis. In patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis who did not have kidney involvement, an increase in ANCA was associated with a lower risk of disease recurrence.
By measuring the level of ANCA in patients with renal involvement in ANCA-associated vasculitis, doctors can predict which patients will relapse. It is expected that ANCAs will be used as a test indicator to prevent the recurrence of serious diseases in which the kidneys must be dialyzed.
